Copy print of a photograph of Civil War veteran James A. Jackson, a Madison, Wisconsin resident who served as a hospital steward with the 8th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. The photograph was taken sometime after the Civil War and shows Jackson seated and wearing civilian clothing. Originally from England, Jackson was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before enlisting in 1861. After mustering out in 1864, Jackson attended medical school in New York and moved back to Madison upon graduation. He practiced medicine in Stoughton, Wisconsin and DePere, Wisconsin, and established the Dane County Medical Society and the Jackson Medical Clinic in Madison.
